A celebration of faith, tradition and local flavours

The Feast of Sant’Abbondio is the celebration of the patron saint of the city of Como, which takes place every year around August 31st. The event combines religious moments, typical gastronomy, entertainment and popular traditions, transforming the city into a meeting and sharing place for residents and visitors. Purpose of the event

  • Celebrate Saint Abbondio, the fourth bishop of Como, who lived in the 5th century.

  • Promote the city’s religious and cultural traditions.

  • Promote local cuisine and local products.

  • To offer moments of leisure and entertainment for all ages.

Program detail

Religious celebrations

  • Sunday 24 August: Concert by the Alessandro Volta City Philharmonic at the Basilica of Sant’Abbondio.

  • Friday 29 August: First Vespers with a message to the city, presided over by the Bishop of Como.

  • Saturday 30th August:

    • 8:30 am: Morning Prayer.

    • 10:00 am: Pontifical Mass in the Cathedral.

    • 6:00 pm: Holy Mass in the Basilica of Sant’Abbondio.

    • 8.45pm: Concert in honor of Sant’Abbondio.

  • Sunday 31 August: 4.30pm: Final Holy Mass in the Basilica.

Catering area

  • Opening hours:

    • Thursday 29th and Friday 30th August: from 7:00 pm to 11:30 pm.

    • Saturday 31 August: from 11:00 to 23:30.

    • Sunday 1st September: from 11:00 to 17:00.

  • Proposte gastronomiche:

    • Typical dishes of Como cuisine, such as pizzoccheri, shin, zero-mile lake fish.

    • Street food by local farms.

    • Selection of local craft beers.

Entertainment and activities

  • Thursday 29 August: Performance by the Baradello Band.

  • Friday 30 August: Concert of the VOXA Vocal Quartet.

  • Saturday 31st August:

    • Clowning and juggling show for adults and children.

    • “Soccorritopoli” workshop/game by Croce Azzurra.

  • Play area: Trampoline jump and inflatable slide for children.

Exhibitions

  • “Plinius” Exhibition: Exhibition of comic strips by Japanese author Mari Yamazaki, dedicated to the life of Pliny the Elder, at the Church of Saints Cosma and Damiano.

Livestock exhibition

  • Sunday 1st September:

    • From 9:00 am along the city walls in Viale Cattaneo.

    • Exhibition of farm animals from the province.

    • “Campagna Amica” market of Coldiretti producers.

    • Historical reenactment by the Palio del Baradello.
